Senior Cadets

Grade 6+: 11 yrs+

Requirements

For Cadets entering into the Senior Patrols, whether a former Junior Cadet, a new youth member, or an adult member, we require that ALL mandatory requirements of Saint George’s Dragon Slayers are completed prior to receiving the Saint George Dragon Slayer patch, a Senior Cadet patrol patch, silver AC stars, or leadership roles. All Senior Cadets should be in the 6th grade (or 11 years old and older, adults are included).

Ranking System for Senior Cadets (6th grade and 11 years and up)

1 Star Cadet = 4 Achievement Courses completed
2 Star Cadet = 8 Achievement Courses completed
3 Star Cadet = 12 Achievement Courses completed
4 Star Cadet = 16 Achievement Courses completed

In keeping with the father/male guardian and son Troops of Saint George mission, as a father/male guardian completes the Achievement Course requirements alongside his son(s), the youth cadet will receive a silver Achievement Course Star patch with a Gold border for every 4 Achievement Courses completed together to signify to all their partnership. To secure this special award, the father/male guardian must participate in ALL 4 Achievement Courses completed for each star awarded.

Tribunes of Saint George for our Supreme Pontiff Requirements
(Tribuni Sancti Georgii pro Pontifice Maximo Nostro)

The Tribune is the Highest Rank awarded to members of the Troops of Saint George.

Why Tribunes?
Saint George had reached the rank of Tribune before his martyrdom. The Order of Tribunes is a membership society that you cannot buy yourself into. A man must earn it and prove himself worthy. He will receive the Tribune patch and medal, which he will be able to wear with his uniform.

Who is Eligible?
The Tribune rank is attainable by men and boys. The Tribune’s award (known as the fibula) will consist of a red ribbon with a purple stripe featuring a cross and the name of the Pope under which you earned your membership. There will be no honorary Tribunes, as membership must be earned in ALL cases.

What MUST be accomplished in order to be considered a Tribune?
First, a Senior Cadet/Dragon Slayer or adult member (father/male guardian) must complete 16 Achievement Courses (8 mandatory and 8 elective) and then complete the following final tasks:

1. Tribunal Project
2. Survival Ordeal

Tribunal Project

Complete a major project to include fundraising and the recruitment of a team of volunteers from within your troop to complete. A father/male guardian seeking the Tribune is highly encouraged to partner with their son on this project.

Examples:
• Landscape the grounds of your parish with flowers, shrubbery, new trees, and statues of the saints.
• Erect an impressive outdoor Stations of the Cross.
• Erect a noble outdoor shrine to Saint Joseph, Our Blessed Mother, or another saint.
• Replace and install new pews in your parish.

Tribune’s Survival Ordeal

This 24-hour ordeal for the young man or man tests the Tribune Candidate’s knowledge of the Achievement Courses which he has completed. It consists of Day 1, Night, and Day 2. On the day his Ordeal is to begin and within health limitations, the candidate’s lunch with his troop should end by 1 p.m. before his Ordeal begins that afternoon (Day 1).

In preparation for the Ordeal, the Tribune Candidate gathers the following 12 items in addition to standard uniform items (i.e. Rosary, paper/pen and pocket knife):
1. Bible
2. A metal cup
3. Flint and steel
4. Drier lint or charred cloth
5. Tarp no bigger than 10 feet by 10 feet
6. Fishing line and one hook
7. 2 canteens full of water
8. Roll of duct tape
9. Roll of string
10. 1 hot dog to be used as food, fish bait, or for trapping
11. First Aid Kit
12. Foghorn

For the duration of the Ordeal, the Tribune candidate camps a safe distance from the troop and independently completes the Ordeal requirements with adult supervision. The adult supervision is present only to ensure the safety of the candidate. The candidate must complete the Ordeal requirements on his own without assistance from anyone or else forfeit the attempt to complete the Ordeal.

The youth candidate’s father/male guardian, who would like to complete the Tribune’s Survival Ordeal, is highly encouraged to accompany his son for the Ordeal and complete the Survival Ordeal requirements. If the father/male guardian joins his son for the Tribune’s Survival Ordeal, the father/male guardian and son candidates should setup camp a safe distance from the troop and independently complete the Ordeal requirements with adult supervision from other adult leaders. The adult supervision is present only to ensure the safety of the candidates. Each candidate must complete the Ordeal requirements on his own without assistance from anyone or else forfeit the attempt to complete the Ordeal.

On Day 1, between 1pm and sundown, the Tribune Candidate is taken by his father/male guardian and his peers to a location that is a safe distance from the troop’s campground where the candidate will setup camp and complete the Ordeal requirements on his own while under adult supervision.

During his 24-hour Ordeal, the Tribune Candidate should:
1. Pray the Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy on both Days 1 and 2.
2. Formally consecrate himself to the Blessed Virgin Mary (ideally using the 33 day preparation of Saint Louis de Montfort prior to his Ordeal).
3. Read Sacred Scripture, preferably readings from Proverbs and the four Gospels. Readings from that day’s Mass and the Divine Office are suggested readings to meditate upon.

In the morning/early afternoon of Day 2, the candidate must compose a personal reflection of his time in seclusion in the wilderness. He can share it or keep it private. He should keep this reflection as a special testimony of his time with God in nature.

After sundown on Day 2, the candidate may stalk up on the troop’s campground where his troop will be conducting normal affairs. To the best of his ability, he must sneak into the camp and reveal himself alive to the troop. He will reveal himself by shouting “Saint George!” and the troop will respond “Pray for us!” and will congratulate and celebrate him and his accomplishment.

Immediately after being celebrated, his father/male guardian and peers will award him through serving him dinner and dessert (a fine time for a grilled steak).

The Captain will promise him the rank of Tribune, as his Tribunal Project is also complete, and welcome him into the Order of Tribunes.

An official ceremony will be held soon after at the local parish or at an appropriate setting where the man’s family and friends can be present. Ideally, the rank and membership should be conferred after the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. If the new Tribune would like to share his Ordeal reflection, this would be the occasion for him to do so.

Please notify the Troops of Saint George Headquarters as all Tribune requirements have been met with full names and date of completion. TSG Headquarters will have the Tribune Medal engraved and mailed out with the uniform patch.
